No matter what point in life you are in, changing careers can be stressful. Especially if you are entering a career in a different sector. But you have to do what is best for you emotionally and financially. There is no point staying in a career that first and foremost doesn’t bring you happiness.
For instance, when I graduated with my undergraduate degree I went to law school. Everything I did prior to graduating undergrad was to prepare me to be an attorney. Long story short, I applied, I got in, and before you know it I was sitting in law school ready to begin my career, so I thought. As the days went by I noticed I wasn’t as passionate about law as my fellow classmates were. I literally was going through the motions of going to class and completing my assignments. And don’t get me wrong I was doing well on my coursework, but things started to take an emotional toll.
I found myself being depressed, angry, and not willing to go that extra mile (that one must have to complete assignments in law school) to get things done. Before I knew it I broke out in hives and I was just worn out mentally because I knew in my heart I wasn’t where I was supposed to be. My backup plan should’ve been my first plan, which was social work.
Long story short I went to a mentor of mine in the law school and she told me to think things through and follow my heart. At the end of the day that is exactly what I did. I withdrew from law school a week before finals and entered the master’s of social work program the following year. And today I am a proud Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Many of you may find yourself in the same dilemma, because you begin to think about the time, money, and effort you put into your career. And you begin to feel pissed off that you may have made the wrong decision. But the good thing is THIS IS YOUR LIFE and you can go through it as you please. Don’t be afraid or frustrated about where you are. Because lets face it, as we experience life our interest change. And that’s ok! So let me give you some tips to help you along the way. Here are 5 things you should know before changing careers:
1). Pay attention to your heart, then your mind. Sometimes overthinking things can hinder us from being happy.
2). Don’t worry about what others will say. You are the one that has to put the time and effort into your success. No one else!
3). Take a leap of faith and get the ball rolling into the career you know you want. Because if things were going good you wouldn’t be considering a change.
4). Don’t look at the time you have put into your career as a loss. You definitely have learned a lot that can help you to excel on the next level.
5. You’re not the first person to want to change careers. Reach out to someone who has been where you are and let them help you.
Remember, it is not the end of the world. And all is not definitely loss. If you can remember these 5 things transitioning should be a little easier for you. Always lead with your heart and not your mind.
